WHITTINGTON is a parish 3 miles from Lichfield in the north division of the country hundred of North Offlow, union, county court district, and diocese of Lichfield, archdeaconry of Stafford, and rural deanery of Lichfield.  The church is dedicated to St. Matthew.  The living is a vicarage, annual value £240, in the gift of J. Levett, Esq.  The Rev. Joseph Taylor, of Lichfield, is the vicar, the Rev. J. B. Davies curate.  The Independents have a chapel.  There is a British school for boys and one for girls, William Barker, master, Eleanor Willcox mistress and Eliza Meacham infants’ mistress.  The parish contains 2420 acres of land, of which the chief owners are Colonel Dyott, J. Levett, and R. Wood, Esqs.  The population is about 900.  The lord of the manor is the Marquis of Anglesea.  Lichfield races are held on Whittington Heath.  POSTAL REGULATIONS – John Elson sub-postmaster.  Letters arrive at 7.30 a.m. are dispatched at 6.30 p.m.  The nearest money-order and telegraph office and post-town is Lichfield.
