1860 Post Office Directory

WHITTINGTON is a compact and well-built village, containing 809 inhabitants in 1851,  and upwards of 3,000 acres of land, chiefly belonging to J. Levettt, Esq. and Sir Robert Peel, Bart.; it is pleasantly situated 3 miles east of Lichfield, and 4 north-west of Tamworth, 109½ from London, 20 from Stafford, 76 from Manchester, 88 from Liverpool, 60 from Chester, 33 from Stoke, in North Offlow hundred and Lichfield union and county court district, Lichfield diocese, Stafford archdeaconry, and Lichfield deanery.  The heath, consisting of 338 acres, on the south-east side of the village, is an open sheep walk, where the Lichfield races are held.  The Marquis of Anglesey is lord of the manor.  The church of St. Giles is a neat square brick building with stone tower and lofty spire, and the latter are of more ancient erection.  The living is a perpetual curacy, in the patronage of John Levett, Esq., value about £251; and the incumbent is the Rev. Joseph Taylor.  There is a Free school with small endowment, founded by Mrs Sarah Neal in 1741.  Whittington Hall, a large antique mansion, a little north of the church, is occupied by John Baggaley, Esq.

 

HUDDLESFORD, a hamlet, 1 mile north of the village is included in this parish.  Hurst is a hamlet 2 miles north-north-east.  Tamhorn is an extra-parochial place 2 miles south-east.  Williford is 2 miles north.
